Carpentry Tools Introduction

There are many tools used in Carpentry for heavy work and for fine work.
Some of the tools used -

  • Marking and Setting Tools
  1. T-square - To set right angles.
  2. Bevel - To set angles of different degrees.
  3. Marking \ Mortise Gauge - For marking parallel.
  4. Scribing Knife - To mark points and lines on wood.

  • Cutting Tools
  1. Hack Saw - Hand operated, fast cutting.
  2. Hand Saw - Hand operated, specially made for wood.
  3. Chisel - Cut out chunks of wood.
  4. Mortise Chisel - For cutting big chunks of wood.
  5. Hand Drill - Hand operated drill machine for woodwork.

  • Planing Tools
  1. Bead Plane - Planes a small area, Good for fine woodwork.
  2. Jack Plane - Planes a good amount of area, Good for Tables, etc.
  3. Rebate Plane - Same as a Jack Plane but with more higher accuracy.


  • Striking Tools
  1. Claw Hammer - Used for taking nails out and hammering them inside.
  2. Mallet - A Mallet is used for striking soft metals such as Aluminium, Cast Iron, etc.
  3. Spall Hammer - A large hammer usually with a flat face and straight peen for breaking and rough-dressing stone.
  4. Waller's Hammer - Used for stone breaking.
